Thanksgiving Day Turkey Fryer Fire in Mountain Iron?

11/15/2022 (Permalink)

A person is putting a turkey in a turkey fryer. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in St. Louis County.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were 1630 reported home cooking fires on Thanksgiving in 2017. Our teams in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties wish everyone in Mountain Iron a Happy Thanksgiving! Every year we hear about turkey fryer fires.

The NFPA strongly discourages turkey fryers because they can cause severe burns, injuries, and property damage. They recommend getting a fried turkey from a grocery store, restaurant, or another food retailer. Our fire restoration technicians have witnessed many instances of fried turkey fires. Here are some of the more common reasons turkey fryers catch on fire:

  • Too much oil is placed in the fryer without factoring in the oil displacement by the bird. The oil spills over the side and ignites with the burner below.
  • Sometimes the fryers are knocked over by curious pets or clumsy guests
  • Other times, the fryer is positioned next to combustible materials, like wooden tables or fences, and when the fryers tip over, the oil and fuel ignite and catch fire

What Happens During a Water Damage Assessment in Hermantown?

11/8/2022 (Permalink)

A person checks items off a list during a water damage inspection. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in St. Louis County.

Our teams in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties have been restoring water damage in Hermantown for years. As soon as we arrive, we will initiate a detailed inspection of your home to assess the extent of the damage. Here is some detailed information from our website about Step 2 of the mitigation process:

Identify and Stop the Water Source

We will check for the source of moisture in your home or business. The source must be stopped before any restoration or drying of the building can be successful.

Identify the Type of Water

We will identify the category and classification of water damage to ensure our professionals restore your property based on industry guidelines. The water contamination level will affect the specific restoration processes we use.

  • Category 1: “Clean Water”
  • Category 2: “Gray Water”
  • Category 3: “Black Water”

Survey the Extent of the Water Damage and Inspect the Premises

We inspect and test to determine the extent of damage and how far the moisture has traveled to ensure proper and complete restoration. In addition, we will inspect for safety concerns that may be evident.

Move or Block Furniture

We move furniture, property contents, and block items to help prevent rust or furniture stains on wet carpets.

Smoke from Nearby Fire Damages Commercial Property in Aitkin?

11/1/2022 (Permalink)

Room filled with smoke We restore commercial property damage 24-hours a day in Aitkin County.

Do you know that 50 percent of businesses never reopen after a fire damage loss? Our teams in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties work hard to get your business operational again quickly after a fire. The smoke residue leaves a unique signature based on what fuels are burned in the fire. Here are some examples of the types of equipment we use to remove smoke damage:

Air Scrubber or Filter

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning system (HVAC) air scrubber, or a high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) air purifier can capture larger smoke molecules. There will still be some residual odor from smaller molecules or surface residues.

Ozone Generator

An ozone generator is a fast and highly effective smoke odor restoration method. These machines emit ozone, which follows the same paths through the air as smoke and oxidizes any residual traces in the air or on surfaces.

Vapor Modification

Vapor modification is another odor elimination method that relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize smoke odor

Halloween Party Decoration Fire in Hermantown Home?

Lit Halloween candles sit on a table. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in St. Louis County.

Our teams in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties are trusted leaders in fire damage restoration in Hermantown. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), roughly 800 Halloween decoration fires are reported each year, and a candle started more than one-third of these. Here are some Halloween safety tips from the NFPA to help you have a fire-damage-free celebration:

  • When choosing a costume, stay away from any long, trailing fabric. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out.
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes
  • Make sure all smoke alarms in the home are working
  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution.
  • When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways, and yards.

Strong Winds Causing Property Damage in Aitkin?

9/9/2022 (Permalink)

A tree lands on the house, causing severe damage. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Aitkin County.

Strong winds can cause serious damage to your home. Our Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties team offers these tips for Aitkin residents from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing wind damage:

Trim or Remove Dead, Damaged, or Rotting Trees and Limbs

High winds can cause trees and branches to fall. Make sure any damaged trees on the property are trimmed or removed regularly. Your home should be at least a full-grown tree’s height away from the base of any tree, usually about 40 feet away.

Secure Fencing, Porches, Canopies, and Sheds

Have them inspected and make sure they are firmly attached and in sound structural condition. Secure any parts of fencing that appear weak or loose.

Seal Cracks and Gaps

Prevent wind or water from coming in. Make sure caulking around windows and doors is in good shape and not cracked, broken, or missing. Fill any holes or gaps around pipes or wires that enter your building with a waterproof sealant.

Secure Objects Outside the Home

Loose shingles, your dog’s house, trash cans, and sports equipment can be picked up by the wind and cause damage to your home—secure outdoor objects like furniture, gutters, and downspouts.

Tornado Sweeps Through Aitkin County?

8/5/2022 (Permalink)

A tornado is touching down. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Aitkin County.

August 6 marked the 53rd anniversary of the tornado that swept through Aitkin County in 1969. The tornado damaged thousands of acres of land and caused more than $500,000 in property damage. Our Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties have been restoring storm damage in Aitkin for years. Here is some information about tornadoes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

How many tornadoes occur in the U.S. each year?

  • About 1,200 tornadoes hit the U.S. yearly
  • Since official tornado records only date back to 1950, we do not know the actual average number of tornadoes that occur each year
  • Tornado spotting and reporting methods have changed a lot over the last several decades, so we are observing more tornadoes that actually happen

Where is Tornado Alley?

Tornado Alley is a nickname invented by the media to refer to a broad area of relatively high tornado occurrence in the central United States. Various “Tornado Alley” maps look different because tornado occurrence can be measured many ways: by all tornadoes, tornado county-segments, strong and violent tornadoes only, and databases with different time periods.

Is Composting Vegetation a Good Alternative to Prevent Fire Damage in Virginia?

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

Roaring campfire We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in St. Louis County.

Do you know that escaped yard debris burns are the number one cause of wildfires in Minnesota? The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages people to burn vegetation like grass, leaves, brush, and untreated lumber before the snow melts each year. If this is not possible, they suggest using chipping and composting methods as an alternative to burning. Our Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties teams respond to fire damage emergencies each year in Virginia and share these tips from the DNR about composting:

Greens: Green leaves, plant trimmings, and green grass clippings. These materials provide nitrogen and act as a source of protein for the microbes.

Browns: Wood chips, sawdust, twigs, brown grass, brown leaves, straw, and shredded newspaper (recycle if not needed) are carbon sources that provide energy for the microbes.

Tips:

  • When you use grass clippings, do so sparingly and be sure to mix them into your pile—not doing so can cause odors
  • Food scraps—vegetables, fruits, coffee grounds, and tea bags—also provide nitrogen but may attract pests. If you decide to use food scraps, do so cautiously
  • Monitor your compost pile and remove or treat any weeds that germinate

  1. Inspect and clean the roof drainage system at least twice a year, ideally during spring and fall. This includes all gutters, interior drains, and scuppers.
  2. Trim trees. Keep trees trimmed and away from the roof to prevent branches from rubbing against the roof and leaves from accumulating and clogging the drainage system
  3. Remove debris
    1. Remove loose objects and accumulated debris—including anything left by contractors—from the roof that could end up in the drainage system
    2. Also, check under and around all roof-mounted equipment, satellite dishes, antennas, and solar panels for debris that could disrupt the drainage system’s water flow or cause ponding

Commercial Mold Outbreak in Hermantown Business?

4/25/2022 (Permalink)

Mold is growing on a wall. We remediate mold damage for St. Louis County businesses.

Springtime in Hermantown is a common time of the year for mold outbreaks. In fact, our team in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties responds to more mold damage problems during the spring season than at any other time of the year. Here is some information from our website about mold and its causes:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on clothing or animals
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture, and mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed; otherwise, the mold may return
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Storms Causing Basement Flooding Issues in Virginia Home?

4/19/2022 (Permalink)

The basement of a home is flooded due to a recent storm. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in St. Louis County.

Virginia residents rely on our team in Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties to mitigate and restore storm damage quickly and efficiently. St. Louis County gets lots of inclement weather, and basements are prone to water intrusion. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your home from stormwater and basement seepage and flooding issues:

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

Water Seepage and Leak Issues in Aitkin Basements?

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Water is seeping through the walls of a basement. We restore basements damaged by water seepage in Aitkin County.

Basement leaks and water seepage are common problems in Minnesota. Our Aitkin, Carlton, and West St. Louis Counties team responds to water damage emergencies caused by leaking basements every year. According to the Insurance Information Institute of America, there are five common causes for water seepage and basement leaks.

Lateral pressure: When the soil surrounding your basement absorbs water and expands, it creates stress on your basement walls, causing them to crack, allowing water to seep into the structure.

Hydrostatic pressure: Similar to lateral pressure, hydrostatic pressure can cause buckling and cracking of the walls and foundation of a house.

Poor landscaping: If the grade of the soil around your foundation runs towards your foundation, your basement can flood.

Clogged window wells: If your window wells are filling with water, your window wells may be improperly installed, or the drain is clogged.

Leaky pipes: Inspect your plumbing systems, starting with their entry into the basement to where it leaves, including the sewer line. Make repairs as required.

According to the State of Minnesota Commerce Department, ice dams are common in Minnesota due to the heavy snowfall and extreme cold. They offer these tips for preventing ice dams:

  • Ice dams are not caused by roofing, ventilation, or gutter problems, as often believed. The real problem is a home that is leaking warm air.
  • Due to inadequate air sealing, heat from the home’s interior gets into the attic and melts the underside of the snow on the roof. The melted snow water flows down the roof surface until reaching a cold spot, such as the eaves or soffit, where it forms a frozen dam.
  • Over time, especially with a snow-covered roof in subfreezing temperatures, more ice can build up. Eventually, water starts seeping into the home.
  • Because the primary cause of ice dams is warm air leaking from the attic, the best prevention is to seal leaks with caulking or expanding spray foam, with attic insulation installed to a minimum of R-50 as space allows.

Chimney Safety Tips for Hermantown?

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke is rising from a home’s chimney. We restore fire damage in St. Louis County.

SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties offers these tips from Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires:

Limited air supply and unseasoned wood encourage the buildup of creosote. To avoid that buildup,

do not restrict the air supply by:

  • Closing the glass doors
  • Not opening the damper wide enough
  • The longer the smoke is in the flue, the more likely it is that creosote will form
  • By closing down the stove damper or air inlets on a wood stove too soon or too much
  • Do not burn unseasoned wood
  • In the case of wood stoves, overloading the firebox with wood in an attempt to get a longer burn time also contributes to creosote buildup

Fireplace and Woodstove Safety

  • Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out
  • Do not burn paper in your fireplace or woodstove
  • Put ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least three feet from your home
  • Put the fire out before you go to sleep or leave your home

Smoke-Damaged Building in Aitkin?

12/20/2021 (Permalink)

A wall is covered in dirty soot. We are trusted leaders in fire damage restoration in Aitkin County.

SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties has been restoring fire damage for Aitkin residents and businesses for years. Smoke damage is especially challenging to remove. Here are some examples of smoke removal equipment we may use:

  • High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) Filter. This is the highest quality air filter available and is certified to remove 99.97 percent of all particles down to 0.3 microns in size.
  • Activated Carbon Filter. Often used along with a HEPA filter, this is most useful in removing gases, chemicals, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
  • An ionizer emits negative ions, which cause airborne particles to collect into the air filter or onto the floor or walls. This can reduce allergens in the air to as small as 0.1 microns.
  • Ozone Machines. These machines release ozone into the air. The oxidation that occurs changes the chemical structure of smoke, other odors. After a few hours, the smoke odor is removed from the room.
  • Thermal Foggers. A deodorizer is heated and sprayed in fog form. This delivery method can penetrate very small areas and effectively eliminate even the most stubborn odors.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Floodwood?

A person is seen using a fire extinguisher to put out a fire. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in St. Louis County. County.

SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties responds to fire damage emergencies throughout the year in Floodwood. Here are some safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association for using portable fire extinguishers:

Safety Tips

  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher training.
  • Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
  • Know when to go. Fire extinguishers are one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have a home fire escape plan and working smoke alarms.

A large pile of brush is on fire. We mitigate fire damage 24-hours a day in Carlton County.

Defensible Space for Carlton

Wildfires are common in northern Minnesota, and SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties know how devastating fire damage can be. Here are some tips for creating defensible space around your home from the National Fire Protection Association:

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT

To increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire, choose fire-resistant building materials and limit the amount of flammable vegetation in the three home ignition zones. The zones include the Immediate Zone: (zero to five feet around the house), the Intermediate Zone (five to thirty feet), and the Extended Zone (thirty to one hundred feet).

LANDSCAPING AND MAINTENANCE

To reduce ember ignitions and fire spread, trim branches that overhang the home, porch, and deck and prune branches of large trees up to six to ten feet (depending on their height) from the ground. Remove plants containing resins, oils, and waxes. Use crushed stone or gravel instead of flammable mulches in the Immediate Zone (zero to five feet around the house). Keep your landscape in good condition.

It is also a good idea to ensure your home and neighborhood have legible and clearly marked street names and numbers. Driveways should be at least twelve feet wide with a vertical clearance of fifteen feet for emergency vehicle access.

Two children are standing in front of a toilet and are throwing objects into it. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Aitkin County.

Toilet Trouble in Esko

The kids were sure taking a long nap today. It made me kind of worried, so I crept down the hall, and they were not in their beds! I walked further down the hall, and my bare feet splashed into water in the hallway in front of the bathroom. Then I looked in the bathroom, and there they were, innocently flushing everything they could reach into the toilet with their tiny hands! Water was flooding the floor, and I couldn’t get it to stop. I called SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties and they came out and immediately went to work.

They turned off the water to the toilet and extracted the water from the bathroom floor and hallway carpeting. They set up air movers and blowers to remove the excess water from the bathroom and documented the drying process. Once the toilet was repaired, they completely cleaned, sanitized, and deodorized the area. Now you would never know there had been a flood in my bathroom.

Property Damage in Aitkin

Severe weather can topple trees any time of the day or night. When my tenant called to tell me that trees had fallen overnight, causing damage to her apartment, I knew I had to act fast. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the storm-damaged just the balcony and one window. I called SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties and they arrived quickly and immediately began mitigating the damage. They conducted an assessment of the damage and contacted the insurance adjuster.

The team immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. They boarded up the damaged window and repaired the damage to the balcony railing. Fire Safety for Families

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) intervention strategies are very important when teaching children and young people about fire safety. Here are some fire safety tips and strategies from the NFPA to help keep you and your family safe:

  • Teach young children to never touch matches or lighters. They must go tell a grown-up when matches or lighters are found
  • Establish clear rules and consequences about unsupervised and unauthorized uses of fire
  • Be a good example! Always use fire sources — matches, lighters, candles, fireplaces, and campfires — in a safe manner. Never treat them as toys, or children may imitate you
  • Talk with children about what their friends or other children are doing with fire. What are they seeing online in video games, on TV, in movies, and on social media? Teach them specific ways to resist the peer pressure to misuse fire
  • Give praise for showing respect and age-appropriate responsible behavior toward fire

A man’s hand is pointing to damaged roof shingles on a wet roof. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Aitkin County!

Water-damaged roof?

Even the most vigilant homeowner can be caught off guard by a leaking roof. Storms and high winds can damage roof shingles, and sometimes the damage does not become apparent until the snow melts. According to a study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), roof leaks were more likely to occur in regions where freezing weather and hail were frequent.

SERVPRO® of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties has been responding to water damage emergencies in Aitkin County for years, and we know that even a little roof leak can create a big problem if the damage is allowed to go unmitigated for too long. Here are some loss prevention and maintenance tips from the IBHS to minimize water damage on your roof:

  • Have a professional roof inspection annually.
  • Request a detailed inspection report that includes the condition of the flashing, roof covering, parapets, and drainage system.
  • In areas prone to wind and hail, consider an impact-resistant roof covering that has passed the FM 4473 or UL 2218 standard.

Before and After photos of soot removal Before and after

Soot is not just a powder-like substance; instead, it is black, sticky and will include a mixture of oil that is difficult to clean. Walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and curtains get coated with a fine film of soot and smoky streaks. Typically, the damage is worse with a forced-air -heating system or central air-conditioning, because the duct work provides a path through the house, even into closets. In addition to the soot, a puff back causes a foul odor to permeate your home. Oil-based soot is extremely difficult to remove and needs to be professionally cleaned as soon as possible.

We here at SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and St Louis Counties go above and beyond to get it cleaned “Like it never even happened.”

If you experience the unpleasant event of a puffback or fire damages, give us a call at 218-879-6141

Flood Preparation for your business

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Technician extracting water from a business Call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St Louis Counties to extract the water from your business after it floods.

Do you need to protect your business from possible flood damages? Many water damage restoration services recommend taking steps to mitigate damage before it occurs as a way to protect the property and reduce clean up times and costs. A flood dam is one way to do this. Here is what you may want to know. Using these tools properly may help you reduce the amount of damage your business could face in the next big storm.

1. How They Work

In most cases flood dams work by directing water flow away from the threatened area. Many people choose sandbags as they are easy to build in a variety of protective formations. Dry sand is loaded into the bag, and the bag is then folded and placed to create a wall. When the water reaches the wall, it is absorbed by the sand which then becomes heavier, harder to move, and creates a tighter seal.

2. Where to Place Them

When creating a sandbag barrier to protect your business, it’s recommended to construct it in a way that directs the flow of water rather than trying to block it. This will put less force on the wall, and keep the water moving to a safe drainage location. Consider setting the barrier up so that the water flows downhill and away from the property, or into a drainage ditch or open field where it can disperse safely.

3. When to Use Them

One of the best ways to reduce flood damage is to know when to use a flood dam. In most cases you may want to consider the use of sandbags any time you believe flooding may pose a high risk to the property.

Tis the Season of Bursting Pipes

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

Water shut off lever Shutting off the water source to prevent further damage

A frigid blizzard hits and the temperature drops well below freezing. You had set the thermostat low at the cabin to be conservative and now the pipes are frozen. A couple weeks later as the weather is warmer, you go to the cabin to check on it and find water everywhere from the pipes bursting as they started to thaw. What now? Call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St Louis Counties to extract the water and mitigate any damages from the water.

Tips to avoid this disaster

Insulate the pipes to reduce the risk of freezing. The pipes with the highest risk of freezing are pipes in the basement, the supply line in the garage or the lines passing through the attic.

Seal off any drafty areas such as around windows or doors.

Drip the faucets to keep water flowing or a better option would be to winterize the cabin and shut off the water supply.

Family Prepared?

2/19/2021 (Permalink)

storm clouds, lightning, snow and rain All weather storms

One of the best ways to be prepared in severe weather situations is to have a family emergency plan established.

If your family does have an emergency plan in place, be sure to discuss it, review it and have drills at the onset of various weather seasons, making sure that everyone knows exactly what to do at a moment’s notice.

  1. How will you receive emergency alerts?

Thanks to technology today, it is easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings in the palm of your hand by way of smartphones, as well as receive alerts through radio and television broadcasts. If you have a weather app or Google on your smartphone, you will quickly receive emergency alerts, which can provide you with valuable time in severe weather situations.

  1. What storm shelter options are available?

Taking shelter in areas where tornadoes are common means you’ll want to be in the lowest part of your home, preferably a basement if you have one. If that is not possible, choose an interior room on the lowest level of your home or building that is away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. Be sure to visit ready.gov for other situations that may require a storm shelter or basement.

  1. How will everyone keep in touch?

When there is an emergency, communication is key. It is easy to rely on cell phones to keep in touch with your family, but in some circumstances, that just isn’t feasible. Cell phone towers can incur damage, phones could be lost or left behind, and batteries will die if there is a power outage and there is no power source for recharging.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of Aitkin Carlton and West St. Louis Counties to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

Mold found growing inside the walls Mold growth inside the walls

Every bathroom has the high potential of mold growth. Leaky pipes, wet clothes and excess humidity combined with improper ventilation make way for mold to form. If the cause is overlooked for any length of time, the damages will spread quickly. (In as little as 48 hours) There would be great benefits to periodically check all pipes for leaking or the possibility of mold growing, along with reducing the risk of health effects that could occur.

This Property had a mold issue in the bathroom and the owner called SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties to come out. We remediated it after we performed an air quality check, which reads the particulates in the air. The air quality check is done by;

  1. Taking a reading outside
  2. Taking a reading in an area NOT of concern
  3. Taking a reading in the area of concern

Should you suspect a mold issue, give us a call at 218-879-6141 to schedule a professional assessment.

Avoid Mold

Mold on back of trim board Mold after flood damages

Mold thrives on moisture along with a food source. It only takes a tiny bit of water to feed a mold colony. There are steps you can take to avoid mold growth in your home or business. Here are some of them:

  • Keep the humidity level between 30%-50% by venting bathrooms and dryers to the outside. Use exhaust fans while cooking, cleaning or washing dishes.
  • Have the proper insulation in your home to reduce condensation on cold surfaces.
  • Don’t carpet bathrooms, kitchen areas or areas that hold moisture.
  • Cover dirt in crawlspaces with a moisture barrier plastic sheeting.

This homeowner had mold growth on the back side of the trim board after a flood. We restored the damages for them quickly. Don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO if you discover mold in your home or business. We will come out and mitigate it for you.

The Power of Water

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage on the floor Water travels everywhere

No matter what the cause is, the damage from water can be extreme. It travels everywhere and reaches behind walls. It can get inside the smallest of places and can go through almost anything. It has the ability to reform landscaping over time and can be powerful enough to wash away roads or weaken the foundation of your house. Water can also cause chaos and disrupt your life at a slow and steady pace, A leaky pipe or overrun tub or sink will allow the water to travel in, under and through anything it can get to including places you cant see such as inside a wall. If it goes undetected, the start of mold growth can occur causing even more damages.

If you experience a flood or any other type of water damage, give SERVPRO a call to get it bone-dry with our high-tech equipment.

Soot Removal

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

Technician power washing soot off the wall Our technician removing soot after the fire

Equipment in the pole barn caught on fire causing a lot of soot damage for this Bemidji homeowner. SERVPRO of Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Hibbing got in there quickly and started the restoration process.

Our Technicians follow Certified Professional guidelines to remove soot after a fire by cleaning bottom to top to avoid streaking. Ceilings are done last. To reduce chances of mold growth, the areas cleaned will be wiped dry. Once completely dry, painting would be done if needed.

What NOT to do after a fire:

  • Do not attempt to clean it yourself. Soot is dangerous to breathe and if surfaces are not properly washed, the damage can be made worse.
  • Do not use any canned or packaged food that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
  • Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet as the wiring may be damaged.

Do you suspect a Sewer Blockage?

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Sewage backup in basement The owner removed the cleanout cap to check for a blockage and sewage spilled out all over the basement floor.

To check sewer cleanout for possible blockage in the sewer line, make sure you turn off the water source to avoid a lot of damages from spillage when removing the cap. It is recommended that you know where all of the locations of the cleanout caps are, not just the main one. Knowing this will help you maintain proper function of the sewer lines, to avoid sewage back up into your home.

A few things to do if you suspect a blockage would be;

  • Listen for gurgling in the drains of your sinks, bathtubs, shower stalls and toilets. Hearing a gurgling sound is an indication that you may have a blockage.
  • Flush your toilet and check to see if water backs up into the tub or shower.
  • When you wash clothes, check to see if water backs up into the tub or shower. A clog will cause the water to go elsewhere as it tries to drain.
  • Run the bathroom sink water and watch your toilet for bubbles or rising water.

Contact a plumber to help clear the blockage and if you experience the unfortunate event of a backup into the house, shut off the water source and then give SERVPRO a call to help with possible solutions and damage control.

Our booth display at show Our booth at Taking Care of Business

“Taking Care of Business”, an annual business event where several business’s set up tables with displays and free samples or giveaways. Each business voted for the best display and a prize was given to the winner. Each table also had a drawing to give away a gift. There were appetizers to snack on and fun to be had by all. Our table had rings for the kids that had flashing lights and candy to give away along with notepads and pens. Our drawing was for a beautiful floral arrangement. We had a board display to show how far out from our office we go to jobsites along with the different types of losses.

A day with the crew

11/19/2020 (Permalink)

Sunrise drive to jobsite The sunrise drive of the SERVPRO crew

The crew got up before the sun on a Saturday morning and headed to the shop to load up the equipment for a positive covid19 cleaning job almost 2 hours away. They watched the sun rise along the drive to their destination. Upon arrival of the location, they checked in with the owner to discuss areas of concern. The crew then got suited up in full PPE and gathered garbage to dispose of and then began spraying down all high touch surfaces. The disinfectant must stay on the surface and remain wet for 10 minutes and then the crew began to wipe it down. Depending on the type of floor it was then mopped before moving on to the next room. The crew worked hard to get the job done in the most efficient way to help the business open back up. Once the job was complete and all was certified clean, the crew came out of the full PPE and headed back to the shop before heading back home.

Soot Commercial Fire

Dry cleaning is commonly the method used in removing soot and the use of a dry chemical sponge is used in this process. The sponge is 100% natural rubber and is non-abrasive.

Another method used is Wet cleaning which uses a specialized solution to remove the soot. This method should be done with caution on porous surfaces.

The soot damage should be treated or properly removed as soon as possible as tiny particles of the soot can be inhaled. Black soot can be mistaken for mold. Sometimes black soot can be from scented candles as the oils in the candle do not burn completely, then the oil enters the air and turns into black soot.

SERVPRO is certified in the current methods of fire, smoke and soot removal. We are available 24/7 to help restore "Like it never even happened."

Electrical Fire Commercial Electrical Fire

SERVPRO works to make it "Like it never even happened." Fire, smoke and soot cleanup and restoration is a service we provide and knowing the types of smoke patterns are vital to proper restoration.

An electrical fire can initially smell like plastic burning and experts say you are lucky if you smell something as most warning signs are invisible and odorless. Electrical fires are often caused by faulty outlets or outdated appliances. Appliances with frayed cords can cause a fire by sending heat onto combustible surfaces like floors, curtains and rugs. Running cords under rugs is another fire hazard and should never be done.

According to Hunker website, water can also start a fire as the moisture can rapidly increase the current in the circuit. This will cause a short circuit as the fuse is blown. If there is no fuse, the wire will heat up and a fire could start.

Five Safety Tips

  1. Keep an eye on damaged outlets
  2. Replace frayed cords
  3. Avoid extension cords
  4. Install designated circuit breakers
  5. Never pull a plug out by the cord

Let SERVPRO come to your Rescue! Got Skunk Odors?

When these little critters feel threatened, they will protect themselves by spraying a very potent liquid at the targeted threat. They can spray up to 15' away. It is so powerful that when the smell hits you, it feels like running into a brick wall. It stops you short and can cause temporary blindness and a lingering stench, depending on the level of spray from a light haze to a full on blast.

To avoid being sprayed by a skunk:

  1. Be cautious walking at night as that is when they like to wander about.
  2. Keep your dog on a leash
  3. Make your presence be known as skunks have poor eyesight. You don't want to surprise one.
  4. If you spot one, back up slowly and leave at the first warning sign.
  5. Know the warning signs:
  • The skunk freezes
  • The skunk does a headstand
  • The skunk rears up
  • The skunk stomps his front feet
  • The tail goes straight up

How to Handle a Roof Leak

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

During the rainy season in Northern Minnesota  two of the worst words a home or business owner can hear are ‘roof leak.’ With spring fast approaching there a few tips we would like to share with you about identifying the source area in the beginning, all the way to the leak potentially becoming an emergency.

First things first, here are a few of the many places water typically comes through your roof:

  1. Worn, broken or missing shingles
  2. Where nails have worked loose
  3. Corroded or poorly sealed roof flashing around vents, skylights, or chimneys
  4. Along the intersections of roof planes

Along with being a major inconvenience, a roof leak can cause serious problems for business and homeowners. They can ruin insulation, become a home for black mold to spread, damage interior ceilings and walls, rot the wooden framing, and above all – ruin your belongings.

Here are a few things to check up on that will cause your roof to leak:

  1. The age of your roof
  2. Brick chimneys
  3. Flashing
  4. Missing shingles
  5. Vent Boot/Pipe flashing
  6. Holes
  7. Complex roof architecture
  8. Clogged gutters
  9. Skylights
  10. Shiners/missing nail

A roof leak during a storm can become a major emergency, especially in a rainy Minnesota spring. However, after the storm is a whole other ballgame and that is where we, SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties come in. If water has affected the structure or contents of your home due to a leaky roof, we can work with you and your insurance company to clean up the mess as well assess and potentially restore your home as quickly as possible.

What to Do About Mold in Your Attic

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Any home or business attic can fall victim to mold if a source of water is present. All it takes is a small water leak or excess humidity for mold to form in your Northern Minnesota home or business attic. During Minnesota's rainy season leaky roofs are very common, however, the important thing is to not let them go unaddressed. Mold can spread throughout your property in as little as 48 hours, so it is imperative that you frequently check your attic for signs of moisture or a leak in your roof. Mold can produce allergies and irritants to not only humans but pets as well, so if you suspect an issue, have an odor, or see visible growth call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties to inspect your attic.

The mold remediation process we use is quick and efficient to make sure we stop the spreading as soon as we can. Here is a breakdown of the steps we use during mold remediation:

  • Connect with the home or business owner and their insurance company
  • Inspection and mold damage assessment of the structure and belongings
  • Mold Containment (to prevent spreading to unaffected areas)
  • Air Filtration & HEPA Vacuuming
  • Removal of mold and mold infested materials
  • Spraying area with an antimicrobial (which is safe for humans and animals)
  • Cleaning the contents in the space

If you believe you have a mold issue, call the trained technicians of SERVPRO of  Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties (218)879-6141

Water in Your Crawl Space

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Water in your crawl space can cause damage to your home

Excessive moisture in a crawl space can cause your foundation supports to warp and lose their structural integrity.

Excessive moisture can promote the growth of Mold and Mildew.

Standing water can attract pests and small animals.

What to do when you have water in your crawl space

Have a professional inspect your crawl space for foundation cracks and broken pipes.

Dry out the crawl space by removing the excess water and moisture.

Clean up the crawl space by removing debris and wet insulation.

When to Call A Professional

Water mitigation is not a challenging task, but it is hard, physical labor. You might want to consider the following:

A crawl space that is between 3 feet and 5 feet high is considered tall. Even such a tall crawlspace is very difficult to move around in. Many crawl spaces are lower than this.

Tight Access Point of entry makes it difficult to work in the crawl space. There may be only one small door that allows access to the crawl space, and can sometimes be in an inconvenient area, such as a bedroom closet or kitchen pantry floor.

Warning:  Rodents can often get into the crawl space.  Their droppings can contain harmful bacteria.

Prepping for Severe Weather

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Prepping for Severe Weather With Your Family | SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties

While there is often advanced warning for some types of severe weather, there are also times when Mother Nature can manage to catch us off-guard.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take and safety tips to follow to prepare your family for various severe weather occurrences.

Where to Begin

One of the best ways to be prepared in severe weather situations is to have a family emergency plan established.

If your family does have an emergency plan in place, be sure to discuss it, review it and have drills at the onset of various weather seasons, making sure that everyone knows exactly what to do at a moment’s notice.

If you’ve not yet created a family emergency plan, here are some things to take into consideration when creating it:

3. Do you have evacuation routes mapped out?

Evacuations are stressful so you should always have evacuation routes mapped out in advance. It’s wise to have multiple routes just in case one is impassable, and make sure those routes will have places to stay with your pets along the way if you have furry family members to evacuate with.

Hence, it is wise to have an emergency communication plan in place for your family and a safe meeting place for your family to meet should family members be separated during the emergency.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of Aitkin Carlton and West St. Louis Counties  to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

Is my Sump Pump Working?

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

No power: If the power goes out during a storm, your sump pump won’t be able to drain the water.

Wrong size: If your sump pump is too small a sump pump for your home’s size can mean too big a job for it to handle. On the flip side, running too large a sump pump can shorten its lifespan.

Old age: Just like any appliance, the years can reduce the efficiency and working order of your sump pump. The average lifespan of a sump pump is roughly 10 years. If yours is creeping up in age, consider replacing it with a more current model.

Clogged pipe: Debris can enter your discharge pipe and create a backup. With nowhere for the water to flow, your sump pump will come to a stop.

Lack of maintenance: Your home and the appliances that make it run require regular maintenance. Clean your sump pump three to four times a year to avoid blockages in your discharge line, vents, and floats.

Switch issues: When the sump pump shifts in the basin, the float that administers the switch can cause it to become jammed.

Product or installation problem: In addition to product defects, which are out of your control, improper installation can also cause sump pump failure.

Sump pump fails and causes water damage while you are out of town.

A Homeowner in Livonia came home from vacation he discovered that his finished basement had 2”- 3” of standing water covering the entire basement. SERVPRO was called out to a home in to clean up the water damage.  Upon inspection, Technicians noticed mold on the walls, floor, and contents, which lead them to believe that the water damage had occurred a while ago.

Unfortunately, the homeowner did not have insurance coverage to clean up the mess the water left behind. SERVPRO worked with the homeowner to remove affected materials and dry out the basement.

3 Things to Know About Sandbags

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

When faced with a storm in Northern MN, you may be considering the possibility of a sand bag wall to protect your home or business. Many water damage restoration services recommend taking steps to mitigate damage before it occurs as a way to protect the property and reduce clean up times and costs. A flood dam is one way to do this. Here is what you may want to know.

1. How They Work

In most cases flood dams works by directing water flow away from the threatened area. Many people choose sandbags as they are easy to build in a variety of protective formations. Dry sand is loaded into the bag, and the bag is then folded and placed to create a wall. When the water reaches the wall it is absorbed by the sand which then becomes heavier, harder to move, and creates a tighter seal.

2. Where to Place Them

When creating a sand bag barrier to protect your business it’s recommended to construct it in a way that directs the flow of water rather than trying to block it. This will put less force on the wall, and keep the water moving to a safe drainage location. Consider setting the barrier up so that the water flows down hill and away from the property, or into a drainage ditch or open field where it can disperse safely.

3. When to Use Them

One of the best ways to reduce flood damage is to know when to use a flood dam. In most cases you may want to consider the use of sand bags any time you believe flooding may pose a high risk to the property.

When making a sand bag wall or using another flood dam type to protect your company it’s important to understand how they work and where to place them to direct water flow. Using these tools properly may help you reduce the amount of damage your business could face in the next big storm.

Tips to Avoid a Lint Fire

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

Pull the lint trap from the top or front of the dryer and remove the lint by hand. Pull the lint trap from the top or front of the dryer and remove the lint by hand.

It only takes a load or two of laundry to fill up the lint trap in your dryer. Not only does this cut down the functional efficiency of the dryer, but it also creates the risk of a lint fire and, ultimately, a house fire. Protect your home and family from dryer related damages and a visit from fire damage cleanup and restoration professionals by cleaning the lint trap:

Pull the lint trap from the top or front of the dryer and remove the lint by hand. If there's stubborn debris, rinse the filter under a little bit of water.
After removing the screen filter, use your vacuum attachment to keep lint away from the interior of the dryer and prevent clogs.
Give the trap a more thorough cleaning by unplugging the dryer and vacuuming out the interior and exterior hoses and vents. This deep cleaning step should be completed every six months or more often.

To ensure your lint trap is completely clean and free from lint and residue, follow these steps to deep clean a dryer lint trap.

Step 1 – Remove all surface lint from the lint trap.
Step 2 – Wet the lint trap screen and apply a small amount of dish soap.
Step 3 – Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the screen until all the waxy residue is gone.
Step 4 – Rinse the screen thoroughly.

It doesn't take much effort to prevent a dryer fire, and your efforts will result in financial savings and a dryer in top working condition.

Dryer Maintenance for Safe Operation
Removing lint from the trap isn't the only maintenance step you can take to reduce the risk of a lint fire. You can also wipe down the door of the dryer, clean out the outside vent, and avoid setting the temperature of the dryer too high. Only run the dryer when you have a full load but don't overfill the appliance.

Tips for Improved Efficiency
There are a few other tips you can use to get the best results from this appliance. For example, when you do back-to-back loads of laundry, moving a second load into the dryer right after the first load comes out, there's residual heat and the dryer won't have to work so hard the second time around. If you run your load in the washing machine through an extra spin cycle, there is less water for the dryer to remove. Finally, add a dry towel to your load in the dryer; this helps your clothes get dry faster.
The best way to avoid a lint fire is to clean the lint trap each time your run a load through the appliance. Complete a more thorough cleaning two or three times a year to boost efficiency and improve safety. Protect your northern Minnesota home and family with these simple maintenance steps.

Cleaning up after water damage

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

Depending on the amount of water first thing salvage important belongings. In the case of standing water in any room, you should quickly unplug any electronics before you start recovering important belongings. When salvaging items that have come in contact with water, prioritize things that are the most difficult to replace or the most expensive, such as important documents, family keepsakes, computers, and TVs.  Start by wiping all of your personal items down with an antimicrobial, move them to a dry location and put fans on them, until the insurance company can get there to assess if items need to be professionally cleaned or thrown away. Other than damaged drywall and flooring, keep everything around until the insurance company comes, so they can confirm the quality and grade of your items to file your claim. If you’ve been gone with a water leak for more than 72 hours, mold has had a chance to spread, and it’s all considered graywater – meaning everything must go.

Reasons to keep your bedroom door closed

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

The thought of a fire for a homeowner can cause many emotions. Closing doors is one habit that can help prevent the spread of fire damage. Closing doors prevents the fire from getting more oxygen and room to spread at a faster rate. Smoke and soot travel throughout the house and breathing in the smoke inhalation is very dangerous. Smoke contains many toxic products including carbon monoxide. It is important to close your bedroom door at night while you sleep. The alarms will go off and wake you up, giving you time to get out without the flames, toxic smoke, and high head temperatures in your room. Make sure you check the smoke detectors in your home often and have one close to where you sleep. SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties is here to help provide services to prevent long-term problems. It may not look like much water

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

There's nothing like waking up first thing in the morning, walking out of your bedroom and into a pool of water in your hallway. Next thing you know your socks are wet, and you just realized today might be considered a bad day. First thing anyone does in this situation is figure out where it came from. You discover that you have a broken water line to the vanity sink in your bathroom. You turn off the valve right there under the sink and stop the water and call your plumber to come fix it. That's not the end of the issue yet.

So, the plumber is on his way and you're looking around at all this water on the bathroom floor, your carpeted hallway is soaked and of course there is still water dripping out from the vanity. This is a mess most people don't know how to handle, a few towels and the dehumidifier out of your basement might not be the answer. The common reaction to water everywhere is to get some towels and maybe a fan or two.

When it comes to large amounts of water, towels and fans are not going to be enough to dry things below the surface. Once water has saturated a carpet down to the pad, the sub floor is now affected. Same for walls, the outer layer of drywall being saturated means that most likely there is wet framing studs that are at risk of being wet as well. With the knowledge, you now know the next call should be SERVPRO.

SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties has certified water restoration technicians with the training and tools to make sure that everything is dry and sanitary by the time the job is done. SERVPRO will work with you and your insurance company to make sure everything is handled properly and to IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) standards.

What can I do to prevent mold from growing in my home?

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

Since mold needs a food source and moisture to grow, the best thing you can do is to prevent moisture problems that allow mold to grow.

  • Maintain lower levels of humidity in your home (preferably between 30-50%) by: venting bathrooms and dryers to the outside; using air conditioners and de-humidifiers; increasing ventilation by adding crawlspace and attic vents; using exhaust fans when cooking, dishwashing, and cleaning, etc.
  • Add insulation to reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces such as windows, pipes, exterior walls, roofs, or floors.
  • Inspect your home regularly for indications and sources of indoor moisture such as leaking pipes, appliance hoses, showers, tubs, sinks and toilets. Replace plastic hoses with steel-reinforced hoses. Check windows, doors, attics and ceilings for leaks or evidence of water stains or odors, particularly after rains. Fix plumbing, flashing, and roof leaks right away.
  • Don't carpet bathrooms, basements, kitchens or other areas prone to moisture. Clean bathrooms often and keep surfaces dry.
  • Cover dirt in crawlspaces with a moisture barrier plastic sheeting.
  • Prevent water from entering basements and crawlspaces by repairing holes and cracks in walls and foundation. Use landscaping to direct water away from your foundation.
  • Clean and maintain your gutters and make sure drainpipes carry water several feet away from your home.
  • Watch your utility bills. An abnormally high water bill could signal a water leak.
  • Before you travel, turn off the water at the main valve. Have a trusted friend or neighbor check the inside and outside of your home periodically while you're away.

If you think you may have a mold issue or signs of mold growth in your home call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties at (218) 879-6141

Cleaning up after a flood or sewer loss

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Cleaning up areas of your home after flooding and sewer damage is awful no matter what, but cleaning up the bathroom can be especially tedious. If you ever face a sewage backup in your bathroom, there are a few things that are helpful to know to speed proper cleanup and ensure a safe and sanitary home in Northern Minnesota

Only with the help of SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties, the professional water removal specialists can you rest assured that floodwater has not crept into places you can’t see to wreak havoc.

2. Dry the Area

Though you may be tempted to sanitize your bathroom immediately after a toilet overflows, you should not do so before you start drying out the affected area. Whether you are dealing with a flooded toilet or an entire flooded basement, the first thing you should do is utilize heavy duty vacuums, drainage systems and fans to remove all the water.

3. Sanitize

After drying the area, sanitize it as best you can. Floodwater resulting from sewer damage can be toxic, so be thorough in your cleaning processes. Once the area is dry from the first round of sanitizer, you should plan to disinfect it one more time.

4. Dehumidify

The presence of excess water in a bathroom often welcomes lingering humidity, which only encourages mold growth in spaces affected by sewer water. During the process of drying, sanitizing and restoring, you should be sure that a dehumidifier is always running.

Cleaning up the aftermath of sewer damage doesn’t have to be a nightmare. By getting a head start on the problem and calling in SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties, you can have your home clean and dry again in no time.

Puff Backs...

1/16/2020 (Permalink)

Soot Web If you see this in your home call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & W. St. Louis Counties!

Despite the increasing number of viable alternative heating methods available on the market, a large number of people in Northern Minnesota still rely on oil furnaces to heat their homes and businesses. Modern heating systems are very reliable and dependable; most issues can be readily addressed by a qualified professional. Unfortunately, the malfunction commonly known as the "puff back" is not so easily dealt with.

A puffback is an explosion inside the burner chamber of the furnace, similar to the backfiring of a car. While there are a number of causes - such as excessive debris or a buildup of oil fumes prior to burner ignition - the resulting explosion can shoot soot and debris through the furnace's exhaust system...and into your home. When the soot gets pushed throughout the house it can create soot webs. It may look as if you never clean, but guess what those webs that your seeing in the corners are created by the soot.

This soot is not just a powder-like substance; instead, it is black, sticky and will include a mixture of oil that is difficult to clean. Walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and curtains are coated with a fine film of soot and smoky streaks. Typically, the damage is worse with a forced-air -heating system or central air-conditioning, because the duct work provides a path through the house, even into closets. In addition to the soot, a puff back causes a foul odor to permeate your home. Oil-based soot is extremely difficult to remove and needs to be cleaned as soon as possible.

Fortunately, SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann has the knowledge and experience to take care of difficult problems such as this. Since each puffback situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your home or business, while also treating your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

In the event of a puffback - or any fire, smoke or water emergency - call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & W. St. Louis Counties!

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

Northern Minnesota it can be a wonderful place to live. We have many beautiful lakes, and four seasons for us to enjoy. As wonderful as it can be it doesn’t prevent disasters from happening especially during the winter.

ICE DAM: What are They?

1/18/2019 (Permalink)

Since You Asked

Betsy from Grand Rapids asked: What exactly are ice dams?

That seems simple enough to answer, an ice dam is formed when you have a lot of heat loss through your roof causing snow to melt and run down, but then freezes as it gets close to the edge of the roof. This can be seen by blocks of ice on the edge of a roof, or large ice sickles that hang from the roof. Easy enough to explain, however they can cause big problems.

When you get an ice dam the snow that continues to melt will get trapped by the dam and have no place to go it can then back up under your shingles causing a leak. Many roof leaks in the late winter early spring are from ice dams.

To prevent ice dams, the first step is to limit the amount of heat loss through your roof. Making sure you are insulated well enough is key. The next is to get rid of the snow on the bottom of the roof before it turns to ice. You can use roof rakes or brooms, but make sure you are safe on a slipper roof. If you already have ice making channels through the ice dam allows the water behind the dam to drain off the roof. You can hose tap water on a warm day to cut through the ice. Work upward from the lower edge of the dam. However, the channel will become ineffective within days and is only a temporary solution to ice dam damage.

Document & Content Restoration: Installment 2

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

Do You Have An Odor You Can't Get Rid Of?

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

Do you have an odor from smoke damage or something else in your home? Here at SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties we have equipment to help eliminate that smell. Our ozone generator that generates ozone. Also, we have a hydroxyl generator which is an alternative method for the deodorization process.

The ozone generator is a machine that creates ozone by adding an extra oxygen molecule to the stable breathable oxygen. This creates a less stable compound known as ozone. This gas isn’t something that you should be breathing. If we must use this solution for your odor the home must be unoccupied. This process usually takes 24 hours to do its job. After the ozone has had its time to work its magic we completely air out the structure before it can be occupied again.

The hydroxyl generator is a safer alternative method we use when the structure can’t be emptied of all residents. This method uses UV light to create a hydroxyl radical that reacts with the pollutants and destroys them. This method isn’t as fast as the ozone generator and usually take 4 to 5 days to get the job done.

After SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties has removed the source of the odor, we utilize both extremely powerful methods to aid in the deodorization process to get your home back to a pleasant smell.

If you have a smell that you can't get rid of give SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties a call at (218) 879-6141

Frozen Houses

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

Northern Minnesota it can be a wonderful place to live. We have many beautiful lakes, and four seasons for us to enjoy. As wonderful as it can be it doesn’t prevent disasters from happening especially during the winter.

One way a water loss can happen during the winter is if the houses source of heat stops working. Unfortunately, if this happens it can cause the water to turn in to ice and complicate the process of drying out the structure. The first thought most think is to turn on the heat to thaw out the house but that is the last this you want to do.

SERVPRO of Aitkin Carlton & West St Louis Counties can help with this process by removing as much of the ice as we can prior to heating the house. Once we can’t remove any more ice by hand we will slowly heat the house and extracting the water as the ice thaws. This process will help minimalize the damage that would be caused if you just thawed the ice all at once essentially flooding the house for a second time. So, if you experience a water loss and it freezes call SERVPRO of Aitkin Carlton & West St Louis Counties to help.

Moisture Meters

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

In homes many of the materials are highly absorbent and don’t look wet. This can cause future issues if not properly addressed, but thankfully here at SERVPRO of Aitkin Carlton & West St Louis Counties we have specialized equipment to measure the amount of moisture in the materials and in the air. The three main meters we use are an invasive, non-invasive and hygrometer.

The invasive meter is the more accurate meter for identifying the level of moisture materials. The draw back to this meter is that it has two pins that must be inserted into that material that you are trying to measure.

The non- invasive meter can be used to check moisture of a material that you can’t or don’t want to poke holes in. it uses a pad sensor and electromagnetic signals. Unfortunately, this meters’ reading can be skewed by metal in the materials that you are checking.

The hygrometer is a meter that we use to measure the air conditions such as the relative humidity and the temperature. The combination of these reading can tell us the amount of moisture in the air.

With these meters we check the affected areas and the unaffected areas. By checking the unaffected areas, we get the goal for drying. So, if you experience a water loss give SERVPRO of Aitkin Carlton & West St Louis Counties a call.

Document and content recovery Part 2

Ozone and Hydroxyl

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Do you have an odor from smoke damage or something else in your home? Here at SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties we have some equipment to help alleviate the smell. Our ozone generator that generates ozone. Also, we have a hydroxyl generator which is an alternative method for the deodorization process.

The ozone generator is a machine that creates ozone by adding and extra oxygen molecule to the stable breathable oxygen. This creates a less stable compound know as ozone. This gas isn’t something that you should be breathing. If we must use this solution for your odor the home must be unoccupied. This process usually takes 24 hours to do its job. After the ozone has had its time to work its magic we completely air out the structure before it can be occupied again.

The hydroxyl generator is a safe alternative method we use when the structure can’t be emptied of all residents. This method uses UV light to create a hydroxyl radical that reacts with the pollutants and destroys them. This method isn’t as fast as the ozone generator and usually take 4 to 5 days to get the job done.

After SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties has removed the source of the odor we utilize both extremely powerful methods to aid in the deodorization process to get your home back to a pleasant smell.

Mold Inspection

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

MOLD it’s one of the “scary” topics the we get calls about all the time. The thought of having mold in your house can be terrifying, but isn’t as bad as you might think. In fact, mold is natural and can be found all around the world. Yes, there are mold there are mold types that can be hazardous to your health, but not all mold is presents an immediate hazard to your health. Mold can be tolerated in small doses over a short period of time so don’t panic and call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties to set up an appointment for a mold assessment.

The process of setting up the assessment is simple we just ask you some general questions about the suspected mold. We might have you send us pictures for us to get a better idea of what we might be walking into. From that point we can set up an appointment and a small fee a member of our team will inspect further.

The typical inspection includes a team member to physically inspect the affected areas and use a mold test to determine if it is mold that we are looking at. You can add an air quality test to test the count of particulates in the air. Air quality can be used that is done typically when no physical mold is visible. However, none of these techniques are used for identifying the type of mold. This requires a settling test and a lab to test the results. These tests will come with a report on our findings and an estimated cost for removal of the mold.

A Question for SERVPRO regarding fires

6/12/2017 (Permalink)

Question for SERVPRO:

Donald from Virginia asks: When there is a fire in a house how do you determine what can be saved and what cannot?

Fire Restoration:

When something tragic like a fire happens in your home you do not often think about your “stuff” until after the smoke settles, but trying to decide what can be saved and what can’t can be difficult. There are things that can are easy to throw away, like paper products that have been burned or charred walls, but what about everything else?

When we come into someone’s home after a fire we inventory everything in the house, and I mean everything. From the couch, to the bags of tea in the cupboard. We photograph every piece and get a description to send to the insurance company. From this inventorying we can determine what can be saved and restored and what has been damaged beyond repair.

However they are always things that end up in a grey area. Maybe it is slightly damaged, or maybe it is something that holds sentimental value. The chair that was made by your great grandfather cannot be replaced at your local furniture store. When this happens we work with the home owner and the insurance company to decide how to move forward. Maybe you would like the heirloom to be cleaned even if that means it will not be back to its original glory, but that is a decision that the home owner needs to make for him or herself.

If the unfortunate happens call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & W. St. Louis Counties at 218-879-6141.

Mold Signs

5/18/2017 (Permalink)

Mold

Fungi and mold occur naturally in our environment. In fact, there over 100,000 kinds of fungi that has been identified. While some of these are very useful to us, like yeast, many others can be harmful to your health. So, where does mold come from and how can we prevent it?

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can be from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks, and poor humidity control. When these water problems are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of mold growth.

If you have high humidity in your home, running a dehumidifier, even during the winter can help. If you have a water loss making sure you completely dry the structure is key. Even if you think that all the water is off the floor water can leach into walls and stay wet for a long time after you think it is dry.

Mold affects people differently, but the people at highest risk for health effects are infants and children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with respiratory problems with asthma, and people with weakened immune systems.

If you think you might have a mold problem, give SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties a call at 218-879-6141. Using various testing devices, we collect air and surface samples to see the mold count in your home.

Mold is something that may not be covered by your insurance policy. To know if you are covered for mold you would need to contact your insurance provider.

If the unfortunate happens call SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties at 218-879-6141. You can submit your own question on our Facebook page, facebook.com/SERVPRO-of-Aitkin-Carlton-West-St-Louis-Counties.

Grilling Safety in Northern Minnesota

5/11/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Aitkin, Carlton and West St. Louis Counties wants to welcome the warm weather and give you some grill safety to consider when breaking out your inner backyard grilling skills.

June and July are peak months for summer grilling fires.

The Memorial Day weekend is approaching quickly, it’s time to dust off the grills and put the inner backyard grilling skills back to work.  As exciting as it is to break out the grill for the official start of the summer season right, we want you to consider the safety that needs to be taken when preparing to light up the grill.

NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) says that the U.S. fire department responded to an average of 8,900 home fire that involved the use of grills, hibachis, or barbecues per year.  These 8,900 fires caused annual averages of 10 civilian deaths, 160 injuries, and $118 million in direct property damage. Almost all the losses resulted from structure fires. The leading causes of grill fires were a failure to properly cleaning of the grill, placement of the grill because it was placed to close to a structure, and leaving the grill unattended. Five out of six (83%) of grills involved in home fires were fueled by gas while 13% used other sources of fuel.

Precautions to take while grilling

Propane:

  • Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.
  • Do Not leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.
  • Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible
  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.

NOTE: A light soap and water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
  • If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.
  • Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.

Charcoal grill safety tips to consider:

  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquid to the flames.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • Electric charcoal starters do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container with a lid.

Keep Your Dryer Free of Lint Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties

5/11/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know dryer lint is one of the leading causes of dryer failure and house fires? "How is this possible if you are clearing the lint from the filter between uses," might be a question you're asking. That is a great practice to follow, but by no means the only maintenance you can perform to keep your drying running smoothly. Here are a few tips and reasons to go the extra mile when cleaning your dryer.

Yes, removing the lint from your dryer between uses is a great place to start. But did you know fabric softener can affect the usefulness of your lint filter? The next time you finish a load of laundry, remove the lint filter and clean it as you normally would. Next, run water over the filter and see if the water pools. If it does, your filter runs the risk of still clogging despite your efforts. It is an easy enough fix though so don't fret. Use a brush and warm soapy water and gently clean the filter. Try the water technique again until the water runs unimpeded.

Next, unplug your dryer and disconnect the vent hose / line from the dryer. This is where the majority of fires begin - in the exhaust duct. The buildup is usually higher in flexible hoses because of the potential for excess lint to get caught in the ridges.  Depending on how often you run the dryer, we recommend cleaning at least once a year, but have clients who clean it every season. Take an extendable brush and gently extend it into the vent and brush the lint back towards you - pushing it further just makes it harder to reach!

Ensuring the ducts are clean and clear of obstruction is an important step and checking the dryer drum is as well. This one requires a bit more DIY so if you are not comfortable, please call a licensed handyman.

These few steps can help make your dryer last longer and help reduce the risk of having a house fire Aitkin, Carlton & West St. Louis Counties!

First remove the old caulk or else the new caulk won’t stick. The make sure you cut the tip of the cauld tube at an angle and make sure the hole is big enough to fit the widest part of the gap your filling. Then it is literally like drawing a straight line along your gap.

Repairing a Faucet

In most instances, addressing a leak by changing out the washer is the most logical place to start diagnosing the problem.

Clogged Toilet

Get familiar with a plunger and snakes. The flanged plungers work the best because they create the best seal.

Spring HVAC & Duct Cleaning

6/1/2016 (Permalink)

If the air vent looks dirty, then it probably is dirty.

Are you ready to give your home a top-to-bottom buffing this spring? Why not include your HVAC system and duct work? After all your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system is the heart of your indoor comfort and air quality.

Indoor Air Quality

According to the national Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), the average six-room house collects 40 pounds of dirt, dust and allergens in its air ducts each year. That’s a big problem, considering that 40,000 dust mites can thrive in only one ounce of dust. Those little dust “bunnies” contain a host of unhealthy bacteria, fungi and mold. The EPA estimates indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Even worse, the contaminated air circulates throughout your house every time the heating or cooling system kicks on. Your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home.

Through normal occupation in a home, we generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

Energy Savings

The U.S. Department of Energy says that 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use. When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.

Protecting Your Commercial Property From A Fire

6/1/2016 (Permalink)

As many authorities know, having an automatic fire sprinkler on your property can reduce the risk of fire by up to 71%.

Commercial firesare often the most devastating reality that a property owner will have to oversee. In addition to wreaking havoc on your property, fires can force you to relocate temporarily so you can maintain running your business while the restoration process is completed. However, property owners who access and implement high-quality safety practices can often avoid the devastation and destruction that results from commercial fires. Read the brief outline provided below to learn how you can protect your property:

1. Install Automatic Fire Sprinklers.

As many authorities know, having an automatic fire sprinkler on your property can reduce the risk of fire by up to 71%. Additionally, sprinklers can decrease your insurance premium. To keep your sprinkler in excellent condition, be sure that it is not blocked by dirt or paint. Also, be sure to inspect regularly your main control valve so that it is not left off. Finally, be sure that you take the precautions necessary to prevent the pipe from freezing.

2. Conduct Fire Emergency Training.

Each of your employees should undergo fire safety training. The training can help prevent your staff members from being victimized. Here are a few subjects that should be covered in the emergency training:

Hazard Recognition

Keep all combustible chemicals and materials away from heat-generating and electrical equipment.

Prevention

Inspect your power sources regularly and don't overload your extension cords and outlets.

Response

Teach your employees how to respond when a fire breaks out. Some subjects that should be covered include how to perform an organized evacuation, operate the fire extinguisher, and set the fire alarm.

Other issues that should be involved in the training include:

• Breathing Apparatus Training

• Fire Extinguisher Training

• Confined Space Entry Training

• First Aid Training

• Evacuation Exercise

Also, be sure that your employee team officials undergo the following fire emergency response training:

• Fire Safety Officer Training

• Chief and Deputy Chief Warden Training

• Emergency Control Organization Warden Training

• Spill Response Training

Testing for Lead Paint

5/24/2016 (Permalink)

Character and history are two things many people love to have in their home. However, lead is not. If your home was built before 1978; there is a possibility that the paint is lead based. Lead has been known to cause health problems, espeaically in children. Here are a few simple steps to make sure your remodels goes as smoothly as possible.

STEP 1
Two common types of DIY lead test kits can be found in most hardware and paint stores: rhodizonate-based kits and sulfide-based kits. The type you choose will depend on the color of paint you’re testing. Rhodizonate kits are known to give false positives on red and pink paints, while sulfide kits are known to give inaccurate results on dark paint.

Once you’ve chosen the type of test that promises the most accurate results, you’ll find that most kits of either kind facilitate several tests for less than $100, which is considerably cheaper than hiring someone to perform the test for you.

STEP 2
On each wall, windowsill, or baseboard where you’re testing for lead, choose spots where the paint seems to be at its thickest (particularly if you suspect there are additional layers of paint underneath). Here, use a utility blade, or small, sharp knife to make a quarter-inch incision, slicing through the surface paint and revealing all the previous layers beneath it.

STEP 3
Most lead test kits come with swabs that require precise handling in order to use each one correctly. Generally, the swabs must be pinched in two designated areas in order for the solid and liquid chemicals inside to mix together. Next, you’ll open the swab to reveal the soft tip and press down on the incision made in the paint for the length of time specified on the test’s packaging (usually a few seconds). Apply pressure in a circular motion to make sure the swab has ample contact with each layer of exposed paint.

STEP 4
Now, look for a sign. Many popular rhodizonate-based test swabs will turn red if lead is present, although red paint (even traces of it from a previous layer) can create a false positive. Sulfide-based kits will turn dark grey or black, which of course can create a false positive when dark paint is already present. Even if you choose the correct test kit for your visible paint, additional testing may be required depending on the colors you find underneath.

STEP 5
Should your swab comes back clean, you’re likely in the clear, but double-check your work to be safe. Most test kits come with a confirmation card, which you can use to make sure the chemicals on your swab are reacting properly. The card comes with traces of lead on it, which will cause the swab to change color when it comes in contact with the paper. Now, if your swab remains colorless, you’re out of the woods.

IF YOU TEST POSITIVE FOR LEAD…
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers a specific set of steps to take if the paint in your home tests positive for lead. Since scraping and sanding painted surfaces can release lead dust and create an airborne health hazard, it’s important to take these steps seriously and follow them to the letter before beginning any renovations:

• Using the EPA’s locator, find a certified inspector or risk assessor to conduct a thorough testing throughout your home.

• Review the written report provided to you upon the testing’s completion, and ask for your inspector or assessor’s recommendations on whether you should seek an abatement professional to remove all lead completely or come up with a strict maintenance plan to prevent exposure.

• If abatement is recommended, the EPA’s locator can also help you find a lead paint abatement specialist. Once you’ve hired a certified professional to remove lead from your home, they must notify the EPA at least five days before beginning the abatement process. Depending on how much time you’ve spent in the home already, blood tests may be needed in order to determine your family’s level of exposure and whether any medical response is in order.

• If a long-term maintenance plan is recommended rather than abatement, you’ll be given a set of instructions that include regular inspections and, in the case of renovations, working only with lead-safe certified home contractors who know exactly how to perform their work in a way that’s safe for all involved.

Rest assured that the patience required to accurately ensure your home is lead-free is always worth it in the end. After all, “safety first” isn’t just a catchphrase; it’s a must for keeping you and your loved ones healthy and happy in a home of any age.

Signs of Mold

3/31/2016 (Permalink)

If you think you might have a mold problem, give SERVPRO a call at 218-999-9799.
